Hearing that made me laugh and lightened my mood. That is, until we rounded the next corner. Blue and red lights were flashing near my house. I could see a portly police officer putting my Mom in the back of a squad car. She was handcuffed! I forgot about Connor and my note from April, and sprinted to my house as the police car containing my Mom drove off. I don’t know when I started crying, but tears were streaming down my face. At first, I figured it was just snowflakes that landed on me, melting. I was screaming, trying to catch my mother. I didn’t know what was going on. As I reached my house, a tall, middle-aged, uniformed officer asked if I was James Nelson. “Where did you take my Mom?” I screamed, through my sobbing and tears.“It’ll be alright, son.” The officer told me. “Are you James Nelson?”“YES! YES! Why did you take my Mom away?” I demanded.“Because she isn’t your Mom,” the tall officer answered. That’s all I remembered before I fainted.

    James M. Deem

Hardcover (HMH Books for Young Readers, Oct. 6, 2008)

It had been a very warm summer, and five bodies had already turned up in the area. But something here was different. The materials found with the body suggested it might be very old, perhaps from the 1800s. But radiocarbon dating proved the iceman was 5,300 years older, from the Copper Age. He was named Ă–tzi and he is the oldest human mummy preserved in ice ever found. In this Sibert Honor Book, James M. Deem takes us on a captivating and creepy journey to learn about glaciers, hulking masses of moving ice that are now offering up many secrets of the past.

  • The Prisoners of Breendonk: Personal Histories from a World War II Concentration Camp

    James M. Deem

eBook (HMH Books for Young Readers, Aug. 4, 2015)
Fort Breendonk was built in the early 1900s to protect Antwerp, Belgium, from possible German invasion. Damaged at the start of World War I, it fell into disrepair . . . until the Nazis took it over after their invasion of Belgium in 1940. Never designated an official concentration camp by the SS and instead labeled a "reception" camp where prisoners were held until they were either released or transported, Breendonk was no less brutal. About 3,600 prisoners were held there-just over half of them survived. As one prisoner put it, "I would prefer to spend nineteen months at Buchenwald than nineteen days at Breendonk." With access to the camp and its archives and with rare photos and artwork, James M. Deem pieces together the story of the camp by telling the stories of its victims--Jews, communists, resistance fighters, and even common criminals--for the first time in an English-language publication. Leon Nolis's searing photography of the camp in its current state accompanythe wide range of archival images. The story of Breendonk is one you will never forget.

Many business models, health organizations, government units, and many more, have adopted one or two practices that incorporate automation into their daily activities. As part of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning has seen significant applications across significant sectors of the economies of the world. To date, almost every aspect of our life has elements of Machine Learning. From the phones we use to the retail stores we do our shopping at, the areas covered by Machine Learning applications are drastically increasing by the day. This technique has helped the developers of software to create high-tech apps that predict changes in the market, sort large amounts of data, and offer solutions to major real-world problems. As much the trends are evident on the ground, the theoretical perspective remains an isolated area to many. Scaling through Machine Learning requires some knowledge of programming. In general terms, you need a platform to gain an understanding of the topic and hone your skills in the same.Python Machine Learning covers the concept of Machine Learning, in a detailed but well elaborate language of presentation. The topic may not be simple but is very worthwhile as long as you understand the fundamental concepts that underlie Machine Learning.Inside this book you will find:Types of MLEssential Libraries for MLRegression AnalysisThe Perceptron trick…and many more amazing and interesting topics! This book takes readers on a knowledge trip through solved examples, tips, tricks, and visualized content.
